Yooka-Laylee is one of those games that feels like a love letter to the golden era of 3D platformers—because, well, it pretty much is. Made by ex-Rare devs, it’s got that Banjo-Kazooie DNA all over it, from the goofy duo (a chameleon and a bat this time) to the massive, explorable worlds packed with collectibles. The humor’s quirky, the characters are weird in the best way, and the whole thing has that old-school charm, even if the controls and level design don’t always hit the mark. If you grew up on ‘90s platformers, there’s a lot to love here, even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its inspirations.
Yooka-Laylee is exactly what Playtonic promised: A classic platformer call-back to the golden days of the genre, with all the pluses and minuses that may entail. This game truly captures the essence of what a collect-a-thon type of game should be and picks up as if it was supposed to be Banjo Threeie. The game feels as if it belongs in 2002 and will bring back nostalgia of 3D plataformers. The developers of this game hit all the nails on the head with this project, especially when they claimed it was a spiritual succesor of the Banjo series.
